What are the main differences in the way people from different cultures behave? Some are given below. I won’t go into all the different cultural differences here, but I will give you a guideline. It is very important not to get it wrong as your business deal could be over, even before you start. More about business etiquettes.

  • Punctuality
    For some cultures it is very important to be on time (= punctual ). For others it’s ok to be a bit late. If you are late apologize fully. Make sure you say you are sorry a few times.
  • Business Cards
    If you get a business card from your Japanese business partner it is polite to take it with both hands and look at it before putting it away. In western cultures it is just taken and put away without looking at it.
  • Doing Business
    In Germany and the Netherlands business deals are done in the board room, whereas in the UK a lot of business is done in the pub. In Spain and France deals are done over lengthy lunches.
  • Introductions
    While it is normal to introduce yourself in Holland, you have to wait to be introduced in countries like UK, Ireland, China and Japan.
  • Humour/Smiling
    It’s ok to tell a joke but know who you are dealing with. In Russia it is normal to have a serious face when doing business and not smile at everyone, as you give the impression that you are a bit silly. In the US it is usual to smile at people.
  • Eye Contact
    Direct eye contact in Western Europe is a sign of sincerity but in Japan prolonged eye contact is considered rude.

  • Crossing legs
    In Thailand and Indonesia it is offensive to have your legs crossed, and pointing at someone is also rude.
  • Topics to be avoided
    Avoid talking about religion/politics etc.
    Keep to safe subjects until you know who you are dealing with.
  • Communication
    Communication can be direct or indirect in different countries, so know who you are dealing with. Make sure you give the other person space, so don’t stand too close.
  • Negotiation
    As a general rule, it is better to adapt a formal role and if the situation warrants it, then adapt an informal style.
  • Finger “ok” sign
    In some countries the finger “ok” sign is a measure of approval while in other countries it is considered very rude.
  • Soles of feet
    When dealing with Arab cultures it is considered very rude to show the soles of your feet.
  • Gift giving
    The exchange of gifts is a normal part of doing business in Indonesia, China and Japan. It is not seen as a bribe. A lot of attention should be given to the wrapping as it shows how much you value that person. In some countries
    in non-business situations it is considered rude to open presents straight away, while for example in the Netherlands it is usual to open your present directly.
  • Four
    Be aware to avoid the word” four” in Japan as it means death.
  • Flowers
    In China, white flowers are used at funerals, so don’t give your host white flowers.
    In England, the guests bring flowers. White lilies should be avoided as they signify death.
