Nieuwe woorden in het Engels
De Engelse taal pakt met een enorme vaart nieuwe woorden op. Vooral onder de invloed van social media. Ontdek de nieuwe trendy woorden!
Nieuwe woorden in het Engels. Dat kunnen samenvoegingen zijn van 2 ‘oude’ woorden of de combinatie van 1 ‘oud’ en een ‘nieuw’ woord. Iedere dag komen er wel nieuwe woorden in het Engels bij. Stoere Engelse woorden, Trendy Engelse woorden, mooie Engelse woorden en pakkende Engelse woorden.
Sommige woorden vind je na verloop van tijd terug in de woordenboeken en anderen zie je nooit meer terug.
Nieuwe woorden in het Engels, het onderzoek:
John Sutherland, een professor in de Engelse taal van de ‘University College London’, die een onderzoek heeft geleid naar het gebruik van ‘social media’ termen en de acceptatie van deze woorden in de gewone ‘spreektaal’, stond versteld dat ouders vaak niet weten waar hun kinderen het over hebben. Wat dacht je van het woord ‘fleek’, of ‘bae’ of ‘fomo’?
- Fleek betekent: ‘looking good’ (Flawless Letting Everyone Else Know)
- Bae betekent: ‘schatje’ (Baby)
- Fomo betekent: ‘angst om iets te missen’(Fear Of Missing Out)
Sutherland denkt dat in de nabije toekomst de combinatie van korte teksten/afkortingen in combinatie met emoticon en andere afbeeldingen ook zal toenemen. Zowel Apple als Android telefoons hebben al een ‘emoticons’ toetsenbord tenslotte. Vertelde de holbewoners ook al niet hele verhalen met afbeeldingen, dus is het wel zo nieuw?

Bashtag
A bashtag is a hashtag (#) that is used to make critical or abusive comments on social networking services such as Twitter.
Binge Watch
To binge watch is to watch many episodes of a TV series or film. You watch them one after another without stopping.
Blook
A blend of ‘book’ and ‘blog’ : a book written by a blogger.
Bromance
Blend of ‘brother’ and ‘romance’. A close non-sexual relationship between two men.
Burkini or Burquini
Blend of ‘burqa’ and ‘bikini’ A swimsuit worn by Muslim women which covers the whole body i.e. the arms to the wrist, the legs to the ankle, with a hood to cover the hair and neck.
Chillaxing
Blend of ‘chilling’ and relaxing’. Taking a break from stressful activities to rest or relax.
Copyleft
Opposite of copyright. Whereas copyright imposes restrictions on the distribution of a work or publication, copyleft eliminates restrictions and allows freedom of use for all.
Couch commerce
Buying goods online from one’s home.
Daycation
A trip or short vacation which lasts only one day – daycationers do not stay away overnight.
Decruitment
Euphemism for laying-off staff or downsizing a company.

A tune that keeps repeating itself over and over again in our heads.
Elancer
A professional person who works from home and provides services on the internet.
E-waste
Electronic material and devices that have been thrown away.
Fast Fashion
Cheap clothing shops/stores introducing the latest fashion trends at affordable prices.
Flexitarian
A vegetarian who sometimes eats meat or fish.
Freemale
A woman who is happy to stay single and independent so that she can do what she wants when she wants.
Ghost
A ghost is the spirit of a dead person but the new meaning is: disappering.
‘I haven’t heard from him for weeks, he totally ghosted me’.
Guesstimate
Blend of ‘guess’ and ‘estimate’. A rough estimate without any claim of accuracy.
Guyliner
Eyeliner that is worn by men.

A person who manipulates information on the internet in order to transmit a message, usually political.
Hot mess
Very negative. Used to describe a very unsuccessful person or thing.
‘John is doesn’t know what he is doing, as usual, it is a hot mess’.
Humblebrag
A ‘humblebrag’ is a boast which is disguised as a humble statement, often used in social media. ‘It is an awful shame that my big house and car cost so much to maintain’.
Janky
When something is of poor or bad quality.
“Are you sure you want to buy your phone there? ‘I heard their products are completely janky’.
Jumbrella
Blend of ‘jumbo’ and ‘umbrella’. Very large umbrella set above tables outdoors at a coffee shop, pub or restaurant.
Manspread
We use this when men sit with their legs so wide apart (in public places, like transport, airports etc.) that they take up more than one seat?
Muggle
A person who is not knowledgeable about a particular activity or skill.
Nevertiree
A person who continues to work after they have reached the age of retirement.
